How do prop firms work?

A prop firm lets you trade its money after you pass a challenge with set rules on profit target and maximum loss. Pass and you get a funded account and keep a share of the profit, often 70% to 90%. Most firms earn from challenge fees.

The usual steps

  1. Pay a fee for a challenge account
  2. Hit a profit target without breaking daily or total loss limits
  3. Pass a second phase at some firms
  4. Trade a funded account and split the profit

Are prop firms legit?

Many are real businesses, but most traders fail the challenge, and some firms have shut down or changed rules. Read the rules and payout history before you pay.

Can you use an EA?

Some firms allow expert advisors and some ban them or limit certain strategies. Always check. If you would rather trade your own account with no profit split, an MT5 EA on your own broker account is the other route.
