How to build credit without a credit card
You can build credit with a credit builder loan, rent and bill reporting, a small installment loan, or by becoming an authorized user. Anything that reports on time payments to the bureaus builds your file.
6 ways that work
- Credit builder loan. You pay into a locked account; the lender reports each payment, then releases the money.
- Rent reporting. Services can report your rent payments to the bureaus.
- Utility and phone reporting. Some tools add these bills to your file.
- Authorized user. A family member adds you to an old, low balance card.
- Small installment loan paid on time, every time.
- Secured loan backed by your own savings.
The catch for business funding
These build a score, but funding usually wants 3 to 5 primary accounts, meaning accounts in your own name. Authorized user spots do not count as primary. Use them to start, then add accounts of your own.
How long it takes
A new file usually needs about 6 months of reported history before it produces a score.
